AMD Awareness Week

AMD Awareness week starts from 22nd September 2012 to 30th September 2012.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition that is affected by aging. It is where the cells in your macula are damaged and don’t function as normal. The macula is the area responsible for your vision. Someone with AMD will have difficulty focusing as the centre of their vision is blank.

AMD is estimated to affect as many as 20% of the aging population worldwide. Although there are certain treatments that can cure AMD to an extent, it is still a very costly treatment. Therefore people should look at ways to prevent AMD rather than treating AMD.

Factors that affect AMD include smoking, diet and exercise. If you pay attention to your life style, then you can prevent AMD and best of all, it’ll be far cheaper than paying for treatments that cure AMD. Macushield eye vitamins are always worth looking into as it heals and protects the eyes, particularly from AMD.

Do cheap Sunglasses cause allergies?

A recent UK newspaper printed an article about a lady who had a severe allergic reaction to some very cheap sunglasses whilst on holiday. In the story, she wants to warn everyone about buying cheap sunglasses such as those worth £1 as they almost killed her.

Although it was mentioned in the article, it should have given the “real dangers” of cheap sunglasses a more focused attention. That very cheap sunglasses such as those worth £1 most likely do not protect the eyes from the dangerous uv rays emitted from the sun. UV rays have the potential to cause permanent damage to the eyes and if not careful, even blindness.

All sunglasses from eyebuddy.co.uk are proven to provide 100% UV protection. The sunglasses may not cost as little as £1, but it’s guaranteed to protect your eyes better than those that cost £1.

3D Viewing, Is It Safe?

Around 10% of people cannot watch a movie in 3D. They claim they get eye strains, become dizzy or feel sick when they watch in 3D. Is watching in 3D dangerous and are there any after effects which could harm us?

The eyes naturally allow us 3D vision (talking in general with two functioning eyes). Our brain processes what we see in a 3D image. When we watch a 3D movie, the image is a 3D projection, a simulation. To skip over the technical stuff, the eyes and brain must do overtime when processing this 3D simulated projection in order for us to understand it.

This maintained concentration from the eyes can lead to eye strain (especially as movies are usually on for about an hour and a half). If the brain is unable to cope with the extra stress, then dizziness may occur. The effect from watching in 3D affects everyone, main difference is people have different levels of tolerance and around 90% of people can cope reasonable well with watching in 3D. However, watching in 3D is not dangerous to the body and health.

Seeing through the eyes of a sight loss sufferer

Cataract Description: A painless clouding in the lens of the eye which gradually expands over a large period of time. It starts as blurred vision but if cataract is untreated, it can lead to blindness.

Macular Degeneration Description: Damage to the retina causing loss of sight at the centre of your visual field. Vision will be blurred, can be distorted and this disease often affects older people. Macushield eye vitamins are highly recommended for this.

Diabetic Retinopathy Description: Fluid which blurs and blocks your vision. The fluid is from burst or damaged blood vessels in the retina caused by diabetes mellitus. Diabetic Retinopathy can lead to blindness if untreated.

Glaucoma Description: Optic nerves are damaged causing permanent visual loss. Loss of vision is not easily detected as it begins outside the usual visual range and gradually progresses towards the centre where if untreated, can lead to blindness.

Myopia Description: A refractive defect in the eye making light unable to focus on the retina. This causes visual images to appear blurred when looking at distant objects. Prescription spectacles can help reduce the effects of Myopia.

Old Age Driving, is it Safe?

As you age, your eye sight deteriorates. Your neck movements are slower, back flexibility drops and your overall reflex dulls. These traits are natural and increases the risk of a possible driving accident. It doesn’t mean you’ll have any accidents, it just means an increased likelihood you’ll be involved in one. On the upside, at least you should have gathered plenty of driving experience from the past. This should help you avoid accidents, however, the brain and how fast it processes things for most people will decrease in activity and poses a risk for driving.

Consult a doctor or optician for a 2nd opinion on whether you believe yourself fit to drive at old age. Prescription glasses may help to an extent.

Get Polarised Lenses for your Sunglasses!

Light reflects off any surface in two types of polarisation, horizontally and vertically. Polarised lenses in designer sunglasses contain a special filter that reduces the horizontal polarised light. This blocks the reflection from certain surfaces and angles such as water, snow and glass.

Polarised sunglasses are highly recommended for people who do water activities, snow activities and outdoor activities such as driving. Water can reflect intense rays of sunlight, and polarised sunglasses make the viewing much more safer for the eyes. Snow has the same effect, so polarised snow goggles are much safer for snow activities such as skiing and snowboarding. By removing the glare from your vision, you can make decisions far easier and quicker allowing a smoother and safer approach in the activity. By reducing glare from driving, you can have better vision and can react far sooner than someone obstructed by sunlight.

So stay safe, get polarised lenses for your designer sunglasses.

What are your Greatest Fears?

What are your greatest fears? Spiders? Small spaces? Heights? In many surveys, these are often the most common answers as well as dying, losing loved ones, going to dentists, making big speeches and more. If you ask me what one of my greatest fears is, then it would be going blind.

Going blind means you won’t be able to see your family and friends again visually. You won’t be able to see the beautiful breath-taking picturesque earth again. When approached with the subject of going blind, at least I take Macushield vitamins which provide the eyes with good nutrients. Macushield eye supplements help maintain growth, repair and protection of the eyes. Macushield has helped improve the vision and eye health of some AMD sufferers and best of all can be taken at any time. At least with my fear, I can do my bit to prevent or at least prolong my eyesight.

Good-bye Itchy Eyes

blepharitis

Do you suffer from any discomfort when opening or closing your eyelids? Do you get any burning sensations in your eyes or constant itching around the eyes? Do you have crusts or debris on eye lashes? Do you have red eyelids or scaly skin around the eyes?

You may be suffering from Blepharitis, an ocular condition mainly concerning the eyelids. The inflammation of the eyelids causes intense irritation around the eyes. Under these circumstances, it is advisable to maintain the hygiene of your eyelids. Wash your eyes with warm water and keeping the eyes moist. If you use soap, only use facial soap and ensure it is diluted with plenty of water before washing the eyelids. Too much soap can make it worse for your eyes. Avoid using make-up and contact lenses to avoid further discomfort.

If you think you suffer from Blepharitis, do not worry, it is easily treatable. As Blepharitis is a very common condition, there are lots of different treatments available such as Blephaclean wipes or Blephasol solution. These products are easy to administer and are preservative free. This means they are suitable for even the most sensitive of eyes. For further information about Blepharitis and how Blephaclean or Blephasol can help control this ocular condition, you should consult your optician or search online.
